Filling The Holes: AL West

Filling the Holes will take a team-by-team look at what each team needs to address in the off-season. We'll look at this by division.

KC (114-48, division champ): This is as close as you are going to get to being a perfect team. NEEDS: Keep it together.

Colorado (90-72, 2nd place, wild card): You got to feel a little bit bad for Colorado. It's a great offensive team. If Buck Johnson is your weakest link at .275-21-103, then wow. Five players drove in 100+ runs. Most of the team is batting over .300. The gap between first and second is 24 games and, from my perspective, some of that could be tackled with better pitching. 18-game winner Matt Damon highlights the rotation and with a 1.52 WHIP, that doesn't say a lot. The team has a 5.89 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. They have a great closer in Ryan Witt, but they need to get to him. NEEDS: Bus tickets for the four stinkers who cloud the rotation.

Seattle (86-76, 3rd place): Seattle hung around and could have made the wild card. Another could team that could compete in any other division. Not to say that they are the same team, but where Colorado has a better offense, Seattle has the better pitching staff. NEEDS: A bat or two at the back end of the lineup that can be taken seriously.

Vegas (74-88, 4th place): It's not a particularly bad team, but one that underachieved. For instance, Benito Cervantes. How does someone who hit 41 home runs have an OPS of .817? This team scored too many runs (845) to not have challenged Seattle more. It's not the pitching staff. Hell, the pitching is statistically better than Colorado's. NEEDS: Some bats who hit for average that can set up the run producers.
